The Story of Jaya.

Jaya is the eldest daughter of an Ayer, (Brahmin) Hindu family, Her father came from Palghat, on the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu about the centre of Kerala, and her mother from Punalur in the South of that State of India.

Her father was a clever man, and got a job with the British Embassy in Bahrain, one of the Arabian Gulf States, he mis-used his position there, got into trouble, and had to run away back to India. The family settled in Bhandup, a suburb of Bombay, where Jaya's sister and brother, first Geetha, then later Laxman, to whom they gave the pet name of Gopu, were born.

Jaya's father had acquired a taste for liquor, and it became his master. He began to neglect his family, causing them a lot of hardship, until finally he ran away to Gujarat, where finally he died from his habit.

Jaya had a fairly well-to-do uncle, and he was very kind to the family in their difficulties, however her mother had to get a job to help support the family. During this time Jaya's grandmother came to stay with them, to help in their difficulties.

In one of the flats near Jaya's place, there stayed a Christian family, and they had a daughter whom they called Jiji, she was a very nice little girl, and she and Jaya became friends.

Though Jiji came from a Christian family, both her mother and father were true and faithful believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, yet Jiji began to realize that she was a sinner, and as such deserved the judgment of God. Her conviction and misery increased until one day she turned to the Lord Jesus and repented of her sins. She put her faith and trust in Him, came to believe in her heart that He died for her on the cross of Calvary, where He bore her sins and the punishment they deserved. She received Christ Jesus into her heart, as her own Savior, was born again, became a true child of God.

Perhaps you may be thinking, she was already a Christian, born that way, why did she have to do those things? But no one is ever born a Christian, you can be born a Hindu, a Parsee, a Sihk, a Buddhist, a Muslim, but you can never be born a Christian, though your parents may be such. To be a true Christian, you must be born again, there must be a new beginning, because no matter what our parents may be, we are all sinners by birth, we are all born with a sinful nature, and we are not very old before we begin to show that nature in our deeds, we become sinners by practice.

True salvation is a wonderful experience, and Jiji was very happy when she knew that she was saved, she knew that her sins were all forgiven, and that when she died she would go at once to be with the lord Jesus Christ, who died for her, and now lived for her and also lived in her. She could not keep this joy to herself, in her simplicity she told her playmate Jaya, what she had done, and began to tell her the stories of the Bible, as they played together.

Jaya listened with great interest to these stories, and began to admire the kindness and compassion of Jiji's God, whom she thought of just as Jesus, the God of the Christians. One day she mentioned aloud the thoughts that had been in her mind, and said to Jiji "It must be wonderful to have a God like Jesus, I wish our gods were like Jesus, but He is not for us, Jesus is the Christian's God. I suppose it is all the same really, you have your God, and we have our gods"! However she was surprised when Jiji replied, "No Jaya, that is not true, Jesus is not just the Christian's God, He is the ONLY God, the TRUE God, He loves you just as much as He loves me He created us both, and He made us with the capacity for fellowship with Himself".

This new thought was very attractive to Jaya, and she began to question in her mind-could it possibly be true? It would be so wonderful if it was.

Sometime later some of the Christian believers in the area arranged a public Gospel campaign, and it was held in a public grounds, or park. Handbills were printed, announcing the meetings, and inviting people to attend. Jiji gave one of these to Jaya, and invited her to go with her to the meetings. Jaya showed the handbill to her mother, and asked her permission to attend. Her mother gave permission so long as she went with Jiji, saying that she was a very nice girl, and that Jaya would never get into any trouble while she was with Jiji. Jaya was delighted, and began to look forward to the event. However she noticed that the Preacher had two names, one Hindu name, and the other Christian, a Bible name. She wondered what kind of a person he could possibly be with a name like that. Later she was to find out that the Preacher was like herself, he was from a Hindu family, and once he worshipped the same kind of gods as she. However he had heard the gospel, found it to be true, and come to put his faith and personal trust in the Lord Jesus as his own Savior, had experienced real salvation, and now was serving his wonderful Savior, and rejoiced to tell others about Him.

In due time the big night came, and Jaya went with Jiji and her parents. She was a bit nervous, as this was the first Christian meeting that she had attended, but she was a bit more relaxed when she saw many other Hindus there also.

When the Preacher began his message, he told how that he had turned to God from idols, and had been born again into the family of God, that God was now his own Heavenly Father. He went on to tell all present that they too could come to know God in a personal experience, and that they too could have the Living God as their Heavenly Father.

This touched Jaya's heart. She had loved her Daddy, and missed him very much, but he was gone forever, it left a blank in her life, she really wanted to have a Daddy. The thought came to her mind, that if God could be her Daddy, that would be better than all, because He would never go away and leave her, and even death could not take Him from her.

As the meeting continued the preacher explained the Gospel, the facts of which follow.

(1). There is only One True God, He is the almighty Creator of all, and the sustainer of His creation.

(2). He is absolutely holy, He hates sin, and cannot have sin in His presence. He is also righteous, and He must judge sin.

(3). Though He is holy, yet He is also Love, a loving, patient and kind Creator. He silently testifies to His goodness every day and night, by providing the needs of His creation. The Bible says that "He opens His hand and satisfies the desire of every living thing."

(4). Man is the greatest and most intelligent of all God's creatures. God created man in His own image and likeness, and gave to man the ability to communicate with Himself. He also gave to man a free will, and the right to choose whether he would love and serve his Creator, or whether he would reject God's authority, and consequently His love, and choose instead to do his own will, to run his own life.

(5). Man chose to reject God's rule, and instead to serve sin, and Satan, God's arch enemy. Thus our first father Adam became a sinner, possessed a sinful nature, came under the sentence of death, (both physical, and spiritual death, which is eternal separation from God). We too are under that sentence, because all of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

(6). God put man to the test throughout 4,000 years of experience, tried him out under all different circumstances, but man proved to be a complete failure, and unable to meet the just requirements of a Holy God. God gave to man His law, and though that law is quite reasonable, yet every one of us have broken one or more of the commandments of that law, and so brought upon us the sentence of death.

(7). God's longing to have man for Himself, led Him in the Person of His Son. to become man, so that He might die in the place of sinful man, thus bearing the just punishment of that law which He gave, but which we have broken.

God, being just and righteous, could not forego the just claims of His holy law, could not pass over, or gloss over the sin of man, it must be punished. Thus He became man, so that He might bear for man, the curse of His own law that had been broken by man. The Lord Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary, thus had no sinful nature. The Lord Jesus was tempted in all points just as we are, yet He did not sin.

At the age of 33 and a half years He was arrested, given a mock trial by the religious leaders who hated Him, handed over to the Roman occupying powers, who sentenced Him to death by crucifixion.

He was taken to a hill outside Jerusalem (that was then,) He was stripped of his clothes, and nailed to a cross of wood, which was made from a tree that He had created.

He was crucified at 9 AM, and suffered terrible physical agony, as well as abuse and reviling by those who surrounded the cross. At noon, the whole world became terribly dark, and continued so until 3PM. During that time God punished Him for what you and I have done. He bore the holy wrath of God against the sin which is in our nature, and the sins we have committed, He bore it all without complaint. After the darkness had passed He lifted His eyes to heaven and cried, "It is finished", the work of our salvation was done, the price of our sin had been fully paid.

(8). Two secret disciples of His took his body down from that cross, wrapped it in clean linen cloths, and lovingly laid it in the new rock hewn tomb belonging to one of them, (Joseph of Arimathaea). Three days later, in spite of the precautions taken by men to prevent it happening, the Lord Jesus rose from the dead, an angel came and rolled the stone away from the mouth of the tomb, to show that He had risen from the dead. During the following 40 days, the lord Jesus came in and went out amongst His disciples, and finally, while they looked on, ascended to heaven, and at that time two angels testified to those gathered there, (and there were at least 120 persons, but there could have been 500,) that the same Lord Jesus Christ, would return again, just as they had seen Him go.

(9). Now because of what Jesus Christ has done, God is willing. and righteously able to forgive the sins of men, whoever they are, regardless of whether they may be Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh, Parsee, Roman Catholic, or Protestant. All who will may now receive the free gift of God's eternal Life and Salvation, by taking the following simple steps.

(a). They must be willing to repent of their sins, that is, to be genuinely sorry for the bad things that they have done, and to turn around on the way they have been treading, to turn back to God their Creator.

(b). They must be willing to put their simple, genuine faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as their own Savior. That is, to believe in their heart, that when the Lord Jesus came from heaven, He came for them personally. That when He suffered on that cross, He suffered for them, that He willingly bore the punishment of their personal sins from a Holy God, a punishment that they deserved. They must be willing to commit their souls, themselves absolutely to the Lord Jesus forever.

(c). They must be willing to receive Him by faith into their hearts, as their own Savior, and then to confess Him as their Lord. Thereafter to live for Him, in the power of the Holy Spirit whom God gives to them as a gift, the moment they receive Christ as their Savior.

The preacher then told those present, that the very moment that they received Jesus Christ as their own Savior, they would be born again, they would become forever a true child of God, and from that very moment the Mighty Creator, would become their Heavenly Father, they would have continual access into His presence, and constantly prove His care and provision for their daily needs, both physical and spiritual.

At the conclusion of his message, he made an appeal, while all were bowed in prayer, that any who were willing to receive the Lord Jesus Christ should raise their hands.

Jaya began to sweat and to tremble, her heart beat loudly within her. She really wanted to receive Christ, she really wanted God to be her Father, but she was afraid. She saw so many Hindu people sitting there, and was afraid that if she did accept, and raise her hand, then they would see and tell her mother, thus making great trouble for her.

However the evangelist made one more appeal, and God gave Jaya the courage to make that all important decision. She said to herself, "I don't care who sees me, or what trouble it will cause me, I must receive Christ as my Savior, I must have God as my Father", so she raised her hand. Later she went forward and knelt in the presence of God, and prayed a prayer like the one you will find at the end of this booklet. A sweet peace, and a wonderful joy filled her heart, she was saved and she knew it. Jiji too was very happy, because now Jaya was her own sister, they enjoyed each others company even more than before

But then things changed, Jiji had to return with her parents to Kerala, Jaya's mother had to leave the flat where they were living, and get a cheaper house in a town further out from Bombay. Jaya suddenly found herself alone, without Christian fellowship. She drifted along for a time, she continued to read her New Testament, she prayed daily to her Heavenly Father, but she also went with her mother to the Idol Temple, though she never enjoyed going to that place, yet it seemed that she was half-Christian, half-Hindu.

However as she grew older, she came to take stock of her position, realized that this kind of life was not right, that she belonged to the Lord Jesus, she was not a Hindu any longer. She decided that as she was a Christian, she should attend a Christian Church. Her mother sometimes went to a Roman Catholic Church to pray to the idols there, but Jaya knew this was not right. She next went to a Protestant Church, but the priest wore robes, they had candles, crosses and rituals, she knew also that this was not right.

When she would meet people with Christian names, she would ask "Are you Christians", and when told that they were, and invited to join with them, to come to their homes, she was puzzled. These people never prayed, they never read the Bible in their homes, they also took her to Cinemas, and other places, where she knew that her mother, though a Hindu would not want her to go. She asked herself, "What kind of Christians are these", she did not understand then that there were two kinds of Christians, those who were only Christians in name, (nominal Christians), and those who had truly been born again into the family of God, those who truly belonged to Christ.

Later she came into contact with some people called "Pentecostals", and she went to their meetings. They did many strange things, they made a lot of noise and confusion, but at least they read the Bible and spoke from it. She decided to continue with them for a time.

The years were passing by, and now she was now a young woman in her twenties, she was a very pretty young woman, and a young man in that Church began to take an interest in her, and she knew this was not right in the Indian culture. However she reasoned, that if she played along with the boy, he may offer to give her something, and she wanted a full Bible, as she only had a New Testament, if he wanted to give her something, she would ask him for a Bible. It turned out just as she expected, so she asked him for a Bible. He promptly gave her his own Bible, scratching out his own name, and writing her mane in the fly leaf. She accepted the gift, but never returned to that place again, now that she had got what she wanted. She knew that what she had done was not right, and was constantly afraid that she would meet that boy again. She only ever saw him once after that, and when she saw him he was drunk. What a solemn warning that was. He had a Bible which he did not value, and no personal faith in Christ. Let us all heed the warning!

Now Jaya was alone again without any Christian fellowship, until one Saturday morning, while traveling in a train, she met two girls, and she judged by their dress, and the fact that they wore no paint or jewelry, that perhaps they were genuine Christians. She began to ask them questions, and found that they were indeed Christian believers, and that they did not gather in a formal Church, but gathered to the name of the Lord Jesus as the Bible teaches us. As she inquired closely about their meetings, she made the remark that what they told her sounded like Jiji's Church. She was overjoyed to find that they knew Jiji, and that she had taken her once to their meeting hall. Now she was really happy, and went with them that day to a Christian young peoples outing, and had a wonderful time. Then she began to regularly attend the meetings, found true Christian fellowship, and learned many things from the Bible.

However when she began to attend meetings regularly, her mother began to get upset, and to question her closely. She did not mind while Jay drifted along, but now she was becoming really interested in Christian things, and committed to Christ, she would no longer attend the temple, or take any part in the family poojah, (worship of the idols).

To put an end to all this she thought to get Jaya married to a Brahmin boy, but Jaya refused to marry any one but a real Christian, one who was truly saved as she was. This made the mother angry, and more determined to force her to marry the person she chose for her daughter. During this time Jaya was praying most earnestly to her Heavenly Father, to keep her from the misery of a wrong relationship, from being yoked unequally with an unbeliever.

Many boys came and went, but Jaya would never dress up for the occasion, until only one suitor remained. He was handsome boy from a Brahmin family, who were distant relatives, and quite rich. The mother threatened Jaya, telling her, "If you do not marry this boy, then I will hang myself". This threat filled Jaya with fear, because she knew that if her mother hanged herself, she would die in her sins and go to Hell, then she would be to blame. It troubled her deeply, until at last she decided to give up her opposition, and let things take their own course, she would not continue with an active Christian life. She reasoned that this was not her wish, that God could have easily prevented it if He wanted to, so she would give up, and let things take their own course, if the marriage took place, then so be it, it was God's fault, not hers. She would continue to read her Bible and pray, but no longer attend the meetings with the believers whom she had grown to love, so she never attended the meetings on the following Sunday. But she did read her Bible and pray, and when she prayed she laid her soul bare before her Heavenly Father. She prayed like this, "You are my Heavenly Father, but you don't care for me, You say that you love me, but I don't think that you love me at all. If you love me why do you let my mummy treat me like this? Why haven't I got a Daddy to look after me? I don't have any body to turn to. However on the Monday, she met Lydia, one of the two girls whom she met earlier in the train. Lydia's family really loved Jaya, and cared for her like their own daughter, she was just like one of their family.

Lydia commented that Jaya had not been to the meetings on the day before, (Sunday), and Jaya replied that she was not coming any more, that it was just too hard for her to continue, she would not go on. Lydia begged her not to give up, she told that they knew things were difficult for her, but that they were praying for her, and God would bring her through. She begged Jaya to promise to come just once more to the meeting, told her that a "foreign Uncle" was coming, that they were going to have special meetings starting the next night. The family had been so kind to Jaya that she could not refuse, she did not want to hurt them, so agreed to come. She came early to the meeting and met the "foreign Uncle", he seemed to her to be huge, a mountain of a man. When he began to speak, he read from the Prophet Malachi, these words, "I have loved thee saith the Lord, but you say, wherein hast thou loved us", ( How can you say you love us). Was not Esau Jacob's brother, saith the Lord, yet I loved Jacob, and I hated Esau", ( that is hated Esau's ways). When Jaya heard these words she was stunned, and as the message unfolded it seemed that the preacher knew all about her, but he knew nothing, however God did know everything, and was speaking to His troubled child. At first she was angry, and accused Lydia, who was sitting beside her, of telling the preacher all about her, but when she was told that he knew nothing, Jaya then realized that it was God who was speaking to her through His word.

After the meeting she went home to Lydia's parents home, where the "Mountain of a man" was staying, and there told him all that is written here. He counseled her to re-dedicate her life to the Lord Jesus, to confess her weakness and failure, to ask, and to accept His forgiveness and cleansing, then to yield herself completely to Him, to let Him take charge of the affairs of her life. There on her knees with tears Jaya did this, and when she got up from her knees, her old joy had returned. She never married that boy, and her mother never hanged herself, but she did persecute, and make her to suffer severely.

From this time, there was no turning back for this helpless girl. Though the might of the Hindu religion was turned against her, she was kept by the power of God. Her mother consulted a witch, a very powerful Hindu woman. She tried to work her spells against Jaya, but at last she told the mother, "I don't know what it is that has got hold of your daughter, but it has much more power that I have, I am unable to do anything against it".

As she grew spiritually, Jaya knew that she must be baptized in obedience the Lord's commandment, though the mother opposed, yet she went ahead to obey. After this her mother began to get more violent towards Jaya. The violence was whenever she went to a certain Hindu temple, when she came home she was like a woman possessed.

Jaya had an accident, a ricksha driver got angry with her and tipped the ricksha over and Jaya's leg was broken. Wonderfully the Lord brought someone to the scene, and though the driver ran away, yet she was able to get to hospital, but later had to spend six weeks on her bed. Even when in this condition, her mother would sometimes beat her physically. Yet at other times she would show great kindness, and tell Jaya that she was the best daughter she had. One day she brought an idol and put it by Jaya's bed, telling her that this was her God and she must worship it. But Jaya refused telling her mother to take the thing away, it was not her god, and she would not worship it. When the mother was not looking, she would put it behind the bed where she could not see it.

Jaya felt great sorrow for her mother, she could see her torn between her love for her daughter, and her loyalty to the gods of darkness. However things came to a head one night, it was 10PM, and raining heavily, the middle of the monsoon season. Jaya's mother flew into a rage, cursed her daughter, told her she was not her daughter any more, and to get out of the house. It was a great shock and sorrow to her, but she calmly said, "OK Mummy I will go", put a few things in a case and left the house. By this time it was nearer 11PM., where would she get a ricksha at such a time, and it was pouring with rain. However the God of Glory was watching over His troubled child, in a few moments a ricksha came, then she had a problem to know where to go. She knew that she was welcome at any time at the Alfred's home, (Lydia's parents), but it would not be wise to go there, otherwise her relatives would inform the R.S.S., a fanatical fundamentalist Hindu organization, and they would make trouble, they would claim that the Alfreds had taken Jaya from her home.

God put into her mind the thought of going to the flat where one of Jaya's colleagues, a schoolteacher, (Roman Catholic) lived. This lady's husband was working in one of the Gulf Countries, so she went there, and was kindly taken in by that person. Within a short time, a flat had been made available to Jaya, in the same building where Jiji's parents then lived, as they had returned to Bombay. It was furnished, everything she needed was there, even food in the refrigerator. Jaya continued there for some time, but had a strong desire to serve the Lord, and after some time got a position in a children's home, school, hostel etc. at Dehra Dun. right in the North of India. She continued there for two years or so.

During this time, many were praying for her, and some were watching her with interest. Amongst these was a young man who had come to India from Australia, and had been serving the Lord there for four years or so. He had admired the courage of this girl, seen how she had stood firm through her many trials, he had watched her grow in the likeness and character of Christ, had been attracted by the beauty of her character, as well as her physical beauty, and he made it known to another party that he would like to have Jaya as his wife. This was privately conveyed to her by the other party, and she was asked to consider the proposal, but no pressure was allowed to be brought on her, either to accept, or to decline the proposal.

Perhaps the most important decision any young person has to make, after receiving Christ as their Savior and Lord, is the decision as to a life partner. Jaya prayed over this for months, and at last was convinced that it was the will of the Lord that she should accept the proposal. She did this and wrote to the young man who was to be her husband accepting his offer of marriage, on the 19th of July 1984, this happened to be his birthday, and he testifies still that Jaya is the best birthday present that he ever received.

She had to leave the place where she had been working, and returned to Bombay as soon as it was safe to travel, after the assassination of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India. By this time her mother had calmed down somewhat, and she was able to return to her home. Some time after reaching she timidly told her mother that she had received a proposal of marriage, and when her mother heard that it was from a foreigner, she declared that she would never give her daughter to a foreigner. However Jaya asked her if she would at least meet the man and talk with him, and she agreed to do this.

So the day came when a meeting was arranged in the Alfred's home, the place where Jaya had found such loving care, wise counsel, and sweet fellowship. Jaya was of course preying very much while her mother was away, and when she returned she timidly asked what her mother thought of the man, and received this reply, "Well he truly is a learned man, he showed me very great respect, and I have never seen anyone so humble. Yes you can marry him, I would gladly give you to him, he will take good care of you, he will make you a very good husband".

Her heart went out to God in gratitude and praise, how wonderfully He had cared for her. But still there was the matter of the wedding, she had no family to help her with the arrangements, and above all with the expenses, her husband to be, was a poor man also, having gone straight to India after graduating from Melbourne University with a M.A. degree with first class honours. Here again God stepped in, the Christian believers arranged everything, and bore the expenses also. The marriage was held in Fort Assembly of Christian believers, Queens mansions, Bombay. Jaya's whole family attended the marriage, her mother appeared to be very happy, as she played the part of hostess. Truly as the Bible says, God takes up the solitary, and sets them in families.

John and Jaya continued in India until 1986, when they returned to Australia for the birth of their first child, a boy whom they named Joshua Prem. Since that time God has blessed them with two more sons, Jason Prakash, and Nathan. Though they have passed through difficult times, yet God has blessed them, and used them to bring His blessing to others.

Perhaps I should tell you now, that John is our eldest son, and I was the "foreign Uncle", through whom God spoke to Jaya in that time of great crisis. I grew to love her at that time, and I have loved her ever since, she is my daughter both in law, and in the Lord.

Though her mother is still outwardly a Hindu, yet she has told Lydia's mother, that she really believes in Christ in her heart, but could never come out of her old religion, because of all the trouble that it would cause.

I have written this story from memory, in the hope that it maybe a help and encouragement to you who are facing the same issues. perhaps you too have been attracted by what you have heard or read of the Lord Jesus Christ, and His great and wonderful salvation. then my dear friend, don't hesitate to turn to Him, cast yourself upon His mercy, He will bless, He will save you, He will care for you through all of the trials that life may bring, and when all is ended, He will take you home to Glory, to be with Him in that place He has gone to prepare. Don't hesitate, trust Him now as your own Savior. Pray to Him now, pray like this, but pray from your heart, He will hear your prayer and save you. Just say to Him

Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, I too have served other gods, I have done many things that I am ashamed of, I am truly sorry for this, please forgive me. I do believe that you came from heaven for me, I do believe that you died on the cross for me, I do believe in my heart that you bore the punishment that I deserved, that my sins deserved, and you died for me, because you loved me. Thank you Lord Jesus! I trust my life my soul to you now and forever, I know that you are alive, risen from the dead, and I receive you now by faith as my own Savior. Lord Jesus please come into my heart right now, wash my sins away in your own precious blood, make me clean in the sight of God, a true child of God. Lord Jesus, I thank you that you have heard my prayer, I believe that you have saved me. I now gladly confess that you are my Lord and my Savior, and I am yours forever. Help me now dear Savior to live for you, until you come to take me home to be with you. Help me as you helped Jaya, through all the trials that I may experience,

Heavenly Father.I thank you that I am now your child, I do want to love and serve you all my days. Help me to come to know you better day by day, and to be a witness for the Lord Jesus, to tell others about Him.

I ask this prayer, in the precious name of our

Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

If you have sincerely prayed this prayer, then God has saved you, you have become His child, but you must turn to the Bible ,the word of God for the assurance that you need. Turn to John's Gospel, chapter one, verses 12 and 13, read what they say. "As many as received Him, to them gave He the right to become the children of God even to those who believe on His name, Who have been born......but of God." Thank God that you have received the Lord Jesus into your life today, that you have been born again by the Holy Spirit of God.

Now turn to chapter 5 of the same book. verse 24, read it for your self, "He that hears my word, and believes on Him that sent me, has eternal life, and shall not come into judgment, but is passed from death to life". Today as you heard the word of God through what you have read, you have come to believe that God sent the Lord Jesus to be your Savior, you have received the gift of eternal life, you will not come into judgment, God will never send you down to Hell.

Now turn to Romans chapter 10 verse 9, and read what it says. Thank God that it is true for you. May God bless you. Charles E. Wigg.
